R/C Drag Racing Terms and Definitions

    Tree: The starting light, consisting of 3 yellow 1 green and 1 red bulb, also known as the Christmas tree that
              indicates staging, Start, red-light and breakout.

    Stage: To set your car on the starting line with the stage lights, on the tree, fully lit.

    E.T. (Elapsed Time): The time it takes for your car to travel the 132 feet of a 1/10 scale drag strip.

    Backup: To produce an elapsed time within 1% of a previous run to establish a record.

    Blow-over: To wheel - stand down the track, usually by the air getting under the car at high speed.

    Bracket race: To race under lights that use a handicap so that a slower car can have a fair race against a faster
                          car.  The tree allows the slower car to leave first according to his dial in time. 

    Breakout: To lose by running faster than your dial in time (a bracket racing term).

    Bye Run: An elimination round without an opponent because there is an odd number of competitors racing.

    Carry'em: To ride out a starting line wheel stand.

    Cobalt or Neo motors: Electric motors that use high power Rare earth magnets.

    Cut a Light: To perform with a close to perfect reaction time, gambling on a red-light.

    Deep Stage: To stage the car so that it almost breaks the starting beam.

    Dial In: In bracket racing, your anticipated elapsed time used to determine your handicap.

    Full Tree: The lights on the tree are set so the yellow lights fall, individuly,
                     at an interval of .500 before the green light.

    Heads-up Race: To race using lights that do not allow for a handicap, both cars start the race at the same time.

    Hole Shot: To beat your opponent off the starting line with a better reaction time.

    Ladders: The elimination pairing; determined by qualifying positions.

    Pro Tree: The lights on the tree are set so the yellow lights fall simultaneously at an interval of .400
                     before the green light. A Pro tree setup is the standard for most Drag Race clubs and is used
                     for bracket and heads-up racing.

    Red-light: To start before the green light appears on the tree to go.

    Ticket: A printed receipt of the racer's ET, MPH and Reaction time. Depending on the tree the
                    ticket will also include 6ft and 66 ft times.
